Supernatural Slashers
A lost group of young people, a killer out to massacre them one by one: Tourist Trap offers one of the most classic slasher plotlines. The screenplay's simplicity, which in other cases might reflect a lack of imagination, creates a tense build-up of one suspenseful scene after another without a single rhythmic lull. Aside from this efficiency (a trait which distinguishes it from those other soporific slashers where entirely uninteresting characters are developed throughout the film until a final explosion of violence is reached) Tourist Trap also sets itself apart through the telekinetic powers of the killer… And his bizarre obsession with wax dolls that blood-chillingly come to life in unbelievable surrealistic scenes!Candyman is the first black boogeyman in the history of slasher movies.. which was its primary sales pitch when the movie was first released. However, the film's originality lies in its setting : an urban universe that until then remained unexplored by the genre, not to mention an ambitious narrative in which fantasy spins the classic slasher basics into an ambiguous, sado-masochistic relationship between the boogeyman and the heroine. This is surely on of the most beautiful screen adaptations of Clive Barker's tortured universe, enhanced by an enchanting original soundtrack by Philip Glass, the maestro of repetitive music!
