We’ve saved the best for last! Our bizarre Face/Off module’s surgical identity crisis offers you four unmissable gems on the big screen – the unforgettable poetic images of French classic Les Yeux sans Visage, film noir Dark Passage with a mummified Humphrey Bogart slurping liquor through a straw, beautifully styled and extremely strange Japanese new wave in Face of Another and Seconds as Sundays closing movie – John Frankenheimer’s masterpiece in which the main character looks like – erm – a splitting image of Rock Hudson after surgery. A difficult film to find but an absolute must-see, and you get the unique opportunity to watch it on 35mm.

Meanwhile we’re still cruising the galaxy and this weekend we’ll head straight for Uranus! Friday night will have the Man from Uranus‘ weird alien electro beats pounding away while we’ll explore the universe’s outer rim. The B/Z double bill has us on Klaus Kinski’s intergalactic lap and the stained trousers of Sid Haig and Robert Englund in Alien rip-offs Creature and Galaxy of Terror, while later that evening we make way to the seventh planet in Cinema Nova, only to get welcomed by alluring Scandinavian blondes and a monstrous sponge. Yes. On Saturday brightly coloured space nebulas prove to be no match for the colourful splendor of Mario Bava’s Planet of the Vampires and a man in a rubber suit proves to be no match for the weird lilliputian inhabitants of The Phantom Planet. Or no, wait – maybe he does.

We set out to offer you a smashing weekend, and we meant it. Saturday you can also head to the Bozar where we offer you an Animation Extravaganza full of insane, dirty, exciting or simply indescribable animations from the deepest vaults of Michael Helmerhorst presented by Mr Jan Doense . So – yeah!

Why does Tony Rayns show up worldwide to give lectures on Asian cinema? Because worldwide there simply is no bigger expert! So grab this chance to listen to the man talk about the most successful Hong Kong film studio of the sixties and seventies, and about the director who with a graceful yet well-aimed kick launched the whole cinematic kung fu genre – King Hu. What an excellent name by the way, ‘King Hu’. Must have had confident parents. King himself was also very self assured, because as one of his first pictures, he immediately made the masterpiece Come Drink with Me and left the world flabbergasted, after which the Hong Kong film industry got in a frenzy trying to copy his formula. Later passing as a triumphant winner at the festival of Cannes – King Hu was worthy of his name. So Monday at the RITS a lecture and classic film – make a note in your agenda.

Friday and Saturday there’s even more Shaw on the menu! A unique chance to admire the classics on extremely rare 35mm film prints, often the last print in existance worldwide.

Friday is centred around the hidden gems of the ridiculously undervalued director Sun Chung – who made the Shaw-studios’ visually richest films. Energetic kung fu-movies with stylish direction – lots of slo-mo, freeze frames and dynamic camerawork, constantly seeking out unusual angles to use the beautifully lit sets to their fullest. First we’ll show powerful The Avenging Eagle, a film strongly influenced by the Italian spaghetti western and in particular “Death Rides a Horse”. Following this will be Sun’s masterpiece Human Lanterns – a lurid mix of kung fu and horror in which the inimitable Lo Lieh dresses in a monkey suit and jumps from left to right, carrying loudly protesting ladies under his arm.

Saturday has got no less than three Shaw-films on show! We’ll open with Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan whose trashy and alluring title hides a gorgeous female-revenge drama. Next, you’d better first check to see if there’s no ninja hidden underneath your seat, so you can unabashedly enjoy ninja-fest Five Element Ninjas. A fest. Featuring ninjas! At midnight, we’ll end our Shaw-module with the un-for-gettable supernatural madness of The Boxer’s Omen – a wild colour clash full of half-chewed chicken arses, flying heads and cozy vomit-swapping-parties. Just like we said: unforgettable.

Everybody was kung fu fighting!

Or at least – starting on Thursday, when we’ll be playing the first two movies of our Shaw Brothers-module at Cinema Nova. Thursday we’ll serve as first course two highly regarded Shaw-classics, both by Lau Kar Leung. Himself a master in kung fu, Lau was a small and lean guy who sometimes showed up in the background of his own movies whenever there was a need for some anonymous wielding of swords or erm – eight diagram poles, whatever those may be. You probably wouldn’t care less when he’s bashing you on the head with one of them.

Drunken karaoke-nights at the Lau family had everyone singing along to disco hit “Everybody was kung fu fighting”, because they all worked in the kung fu-film industry. Those cats were fast as lightning. Adoptive brother Gordon Liu for instance, whose iconic bald head turns up in most of Lau’s movies. Nowadays also known for his performance in “Kill Bill”, his first big role had him playing a stubborn student who undertakes the gruelling program of martial arts at the legendary monastery of the fighting monks in The 36th Chamber of Shaolin – the movie that inspired the debut album of the Wu-Tang Clan. In fact it was a little bit frightening. Second show on Thursday will again feature dynamic duo Lau and Liu, this time in dark masterpiece Eight Diagram Pole Fighter. Filled with action but also a powerful drama with a tragic undercurrent as young actor Alexander Fu Sheng died during the shooting.

Friday: more Shaw! Saturday: even more!

You better have expert timing.
