The Face of Another

A gravely disfigured man is given an extremely realistic, custom-made mask from his therapist. When he wears it, he succeeds at seducing his wife. But she pretends that she was only "playing along". We discover that the mask not only modifies his appearance, it also changes his behavior and personality. Teshigahara's sculpting and painting talents come through in the film's intriguing visual style, which plays on unusual camera angles, silent collages of images, and even zooms and agitated camera motions. There's a constant play on repeated images, through which scenes and a game of doubles constantly emerge. This film is frequently considered the last part of a trilogy, preceded by Pitfall and Woman in the Dunes.
