The Shooting

In 1996, B-movie producer Roger Corman sent his two protégés Monte Hellman and Jack Nicholson to the Utah desert for them to direct two films for the price of one. After seven exhausting weeks, they returned with The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind – two of the most remarkable Westerns of the 1960s. In the first, a bounty hunter named Gashade and his underling Coley are hired by an unknown woman to escort her through the desert. She refuses to tell them the purpose of their journey. They are tracked from afar by a ghost-like character named Billy: a mysterious, black-clad gunslinger who joins the group. The air is thick with anxiety and danger and gets even thicker when Gashade and Coley discover that they've been dragged into some kind of manhunt... Gashade's desire to get into the clear clashes with his survival instinct. Hellman refuses any idealism or sentimentalism while describing a barbaric and cynical world in which the only hope is to survive as long as possible.
