In Roman times, the people were kept distracted - and thus calm - by great public events featuring spectacular gladiator battles. A principle that continues to feed the imagination, particularly in cinema, like with the recent "Hunger Games".
"Rollerball" takes place in a dystopic future ruled over by an industrial conglomerate. The most popular source of entertainment is an ultra-violent sport that pits players against one another, on roller skates. A cult film with wild action and stylish sets.
"Gymkata" is a different kind of cult classic, praised by many fans because of the film's undeniable idiocy. Robert Clouse ("Enter the Dragon") hired an Olympic champion to play the main character in a movie about a new martial art: Gymkata, a cross between gymnastics and karate.
